In the Shaping Bay with Ross Williams
Surfboards…..they don’t magically appear from thin air. There is an intricate and lengthy process to creating surf craft, with years of knowledge and skill involved from the design process through to shaping and glassing.
Ross Concept surfboards, you guessed it, are designed and shaped by Ross Williams. Starting his shaping career growing up in Brazil, Ross was taken under the wing of his uncle, Claudio Maran, one of the first and best shapers in South America. You can find out more about Ross on the about page.
Ross now mainly shapes in Bali, however often makes trips to Brazil and Australia for shaping also. Being one of the hubs of international surfing, Bali is an excellent place to be based for shaping, plus having epic waves on the doorstep is always a bonus.
People often ask us about the blanks we use, which are primarily Surfblanks AUS and Burford Blanks. Both of these blank producers are highly regarded in the industry for their high quality foam. When it comes to making surfboards, quality and attention to detail are at the forefront of Ross’ values.
Tools of the trade include planers of various forms, rasps, shaping blocks, calipers and plenty more. All of these tools must be mastered by the shaper over years of experience to ensure high quality results.
When it comes to glassing, we use a variety of options, often depending on the needs of the customer or to suit a particular model. For example, our classic longboards are glassed heavier with Volan glassing to compliment the attributes of the board, whereas a custom shortboard for a high performance surfer is likely to be glassed fairly light. Whatever the glassing requirements, Ross always ensures to create boards that are durable and long lasting.
